Preserving Your Tire Chain Life
With the winter weather rapidly descending upon us, it is important to make sure that you are fully prepared to handle the rough conditions. One of the most common tools used by both commercial truckers and the average driver, are tire chains. These chains wrap around the vehicle’s tires and provide traction on both snow and ice. There are a few things that you should know when it comes to getting the most out of your tire chains this winter.
Did you know that the method and manner in which you secure your tire chains, can drastically affect their lifespan? When you are able to achieve and maintain a tight fit with your chains, you are effectively increasing the reliability that you will get out of them. Chains that are tightened as much as possible by hand, have a 50% longer lifespan than those that are loosely attached.
While the amount of tension used to attach the chain is important, it is not the only factor. The average speed that the vehicle is moving while the chains are attached also plays a role. When the vehicle is moving at an average speed of 40 mph, the chains have nearly half the lifespan that they would traveling at 30 mph. Be sure to stay safe this winter, and remember to choose Cargo Equipment Corporation for all your trucking and tie-down needs.
